Gonggi and Squid Game Season 2: The Art of Survival Showcased by Kang Ha-neul

Gonggi, a traditional Korean game, is a simple yet entertaining activity that tests dexterity and concentration. Played with five small stones or plastic pieces, the game progresses through various stages requiring skill and strategy. For many, it brings back cherished childhood memories of playing with friends. However, this familiar game was dramatically reimagined in Squid Game Season 2, becoming a tense survival game that captivated global audiences. Actor Kang Ha-neul delivered a memorable performance, amplifying the tension and immersing viewers in the high-stakes drama.

What Is Gonggi?

Gonggi is a traditional Korean game, especially popular among children. Played with five small stones or plastic pieces, it’s a simple yet highly engaging game that can be enjoyed alone or with friends, making it a perfect way to spend free time.

Materials Needed

  • 5 gonggi pieces (small stones or objects of similar size).

How to Play Gonggi

1. Prepare to Begin

Toss the five gonggi pieces onto a flat surface, scattering them so they don’t overlap.

2. Stage 1: Picking Up One at a Time (1×4)

Toss one gonggi piece into the air. Before it falls, quickly pick up one piece from the ground and catch the airborne piece. Repeat this until all four pieces have been picked up.

3. Stage 2: Picking Up Two at a Time (2×2)

Toss one gonggi piece into the air. This time, pick up two pieces simultaneously before catching the airborne piece. Repeat this process to pick up the remaining pieces.

4. Stage 3: Picking Up Three, Then One (3+1)

Toss one gonggi piece into the air. Pick up three pieces at once, then catch the airborne piece. Finally, toss and pick up the last piece.

5. Stage 4: Picking Up All at Once (All 4)

Toss one gonggi piece into the air. Pick up all four pieces simultaneously, then catch the airborne piece to finish the round.

6. Stage 5: Hand Flip

Hold all five pieces in your hand and toss them lightly into the air. Let them land on the back of your hand. Count the number of pieces that land successfully. Toss those pieces back up and catch them with your palm. Your score depends on how many pieces you catch.

The Dramatic Transformation in Squid Game Season 2

1. Intense Stakes

Kang Ha-neul’s character faced a high-pressure situation as he had to catch the gonggi pieces on the back of his hand amidst immense psychological tension. The earlier elimination of teammates who failed the challenge heightened the stakes, with each failure leading to their immediate demise.

2. A Gripping Climax

The climactic Hand Flip scene showcased Kang Ha-neul’s intense focus and emotional turmoil. His trembling hands and determined expression added a visceral realism that kept viewers on the edge of their seats. This scene became a highlight of the season, etching itself into the memories of audiences worldwide.

Tips for Playing Gonggi

  • Start slow to develop your dexterity.
  • Ensure the gonggi pieces are uniform in size and weight for balanced gameplay.
